  Adobe ha aggiunto una ‘covenant not to sue’ alla decisione di passare le specifiche di PDF a ISO. Da analizzare.

Lo chiamano standard, ma non lo è, evidentemente. Le specifiche di OOXML, il formato del nuovo Office, implementabile solo da Microsoft, fanno riferimento al registro proprio di Windows per definire le dimensioni della pagina. Sul blog openmalaysia si legge che:
le sezioni 3.3.1.61 (pagina 2770) e 3.3.1.62 (pagina 2774) [...] definiscono l’attributo ‘paperSize’. Questo valore è un intero che a sua volta fa riferimento ad una tabella interna che elenca 68 dimensioni fisse di pagine. Questa tabella a sua volta si riferisce non già agli standard ISO 216, ANSI Y14.1, o altri simili, ma ai valori usati nel registro interno di Windows.
La procedura di approvazione rapida di questo non-standard ECMA da parte di ISO è un errore che ridicolizzerà ISO stessa. Fermarsi e ragionare è meglio.

A new fellow asked on the forum why we picked eZ Publish. I have answered there, but I think it’s better to repeat it also here for all the Planet readers.

FSFE chose eZ Publish because we needed a system that was not only
flexible and easy to deploy but that was fully supported.  We ran tests
with other CMS, but none convinced us fully until we were offered by eZ
Systems not only the software eZ Publish but also one of their
programmer to assist us in all customizations.  eZ Systems also added on top of that a support contract.  So, the software fit our needs, eZ Publish is Free Software
released under the GNU GPL and we had a developer available for customization
plus a support contract.  It was the best offer we received .

As a good side effect, since
FSFE and eZ Systems started this collaboration, eZ released almost all
of their software under the GNU GPL, and we are very happy about this. 
Some of their software is still under non-free licenses and we are not
so happy.  But the cooperation proved to be good for Free Software and
we will keep helping them do the right thing and become a fully free business.

Let me add that paying
for free software is not a sin, but until today FSFE didn’t pay a
dime.  We will probably decide to invest into the development of the
portal during 2007 to add the collaboration
features we need for the Advocacy groups that are starting to form. But
we haven’t taken any decision yet.

BlueJ è uno strumento sviluppato dalle Università di Kent e Deadkin per insegnare la programmazione ad oggetti.  In altri termini è un IDE per Java rilasciato come software libero.

A conferma che le innovazioni avvengono da un’altra parte, il product manager di Visual C# ha annunciato di aver introdotto una novità nel prodotto Microsoft (Object Test Bench) che somigliava molto al Object Bench di Bluej.   Quello che ha irritato gli sviluppatori di BlueJ è l’attribuzione della paternità.

Al danno di immagine stava per aggiungersi la beffa:  qualche solerte avvocato di Microsoft ha avviato la procedura per brevettare Object (test) Bench. Ma per fortuna gli sviluppatori di Visual C# stessi hanno fermato i mastini dell’ufficio legale.

I have good news today: there are two Fellows that are activating Advocacy in Italy and Austria.  Madero has been working to adapt the Advocacy Project document in Italian and to the school he knows best.  Cristian is doing pretty much the same thing in Austria, although he didn’t use the name ‘advocacy’ (Disclaimer: I don’t read German very well).

I am going to help Madero setup the Italian advocacy group because he lives in the same city where I live. I would also like to help Cristian, but my German is not up to the task.  We can all discuss on the mailing list discussions at lists.fsfe.org or on the forum, whatever you prefer.

Il server è tornato a vivere dopo qualche momento di panico.

Alfonso mi chiede un parare sulla fusione tra Free Standards Group e Open Source Development Labs: fusione amichevole o scalata ostile? Progresso o regresso? IMHO è solo un passaggio evolutivo: OSDL ha esaurito il suo compito (promuovere il kernel Linux nel mercato enterprise) e aveva già annunciato una ristrutturazione negli scopi, focalizzandosi sugli aspetti legali. FSG invece puntava agli standard e all’interoperabilità. Quindi la fusione mi pare un passaggio naturale. Considerando anche che molte aziende ora hanno strutture e competenze interne per quanto riguarda il kernel Linux, anche il ridimensionamento del personale mi torna.
Però credo sia il caso di mettere la scena in prospettiva: l’annuncio della Linux Foundation è da mettere in relazione con la nuova GPLv3, in arrivo, con il ridisegno dei fronti di concorrenza con l’arrivo di Java e OpenSolaris nel mondo libero (vedi il nuovo sistema di governance di OpenSolaris), l’approvazione di ODF da parte dell’ISO. Si sta andando verso la maturità del mercato, alcuni gruppi pioneristici come OSDL hanno raggiunto i propri scopi.
Diversa invece la situazione delle organizzazioni che oltre allo sviluppo di software libero si occupano degli aspetti etici e sociali. Stanno crescendo sia Free Software Foundation che FSFE in termini di membri e sponsor oltre che di visibilità, grazie ad azioni e campagne, ma l’obiettivo di avere in circolazione solo il software libero è ancora lontano.
