Did you think Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) can be good for society? If that's your opinion, you better start looking at facts. Ars Technica reports that

Some Kindle users are angry because Amazon blocked them from their Kindle accounts, thereby blocking them from accessing their already-purchased media. Even if these stories are exaggerated, they once again highlight the caveats that come with DRMed media. You don't own your content—Amazon does.

Do you think this sort of problem never happened before and it's an exaggeration? Well, look again at facts because those tell a different story. When Yahoo Music ceased to exist so did the files that people bought. And to get music bought from iTunes liberated from DRM, people had to buy it again. Facts say that DRM are constantly being used to extort money from customers, and to artificially create scarcity in order to inflate prices. DRM should really be called CRAP as in Cancellation Restriction and Punishment (or Content Restriction Annulment and Protection, if you prefer). Notizia di inizio 2008: Sony BMG sta pensando di vendere file musicali via internet senza schemi fastidiosi di restrizione, i Digital Restrictions Management. E così Sony si unisce alle altre aziende del settore: Universal, EMI e Warner che per indebolire Apple danno diritti ai loro clienti. Le major hanno capito che ci piace comprare e spostare musica tra i nostri vari computer e dispositivi senza essere legati ad un solo produttore. A noi piace l'interoperabilità , ci piace comprare sul negozio iTunes, trasformare il file in OGG Vorbis e ascoltare sul lettore Samsung o sul cellulare. Ci piace masterizzare una collezione di musica natalizia da regalare alla mamma o caricare un disco USB da portare ad una festa a tema anni '70. E ci piacciono le soluzioni semplici: nessun DRM è meglio di un DRM interoperabile costruito ad-hoc (o peggio, obbligatorio per legge). Le major sembrano sulla buona strada, almeno per quanto riguarda la musica. Sembra sulla cattiva strada invece la malconsigliata Viviane Reding, la Commissaria Europea alla Società dell'Informazione e i Media, la quale sta considerando la possibilità di costruire un framework legale per DRM interoperabili. A lei la campagna Defective By Design ha indirizzato una lettera aperta per raccontarle la realtà dei fatti: i DRM, tutti, sono incompatibili con il Software Libero e i cittadini hanno già chiaramente indicato alle major che le restrizioni non sono benvenute. È presto per cantare vittoria perché comunque gli schemi DRM resistono su film (Blu-ray/HDDVD), sui giochi (misto a TPM, sebbene i bug siano sempre presenti e le protezioni aggirabili), nelle trasmissioni televisive (IPTV e digitale, sia satellitare che terrestre) e nella mente di alcuni politici incantati da anni di pianto greco delle major. Agisci: firma l'appello di Defective by Design e sostieni la FSF.

Politecnico di Torino launches copyright consulting services

Politecnico di Torino and Regione Piemonte have launced SeLiLi, Servizio Licenze Libere, a service to offer information and consulting services on legal, technological and economical matters regarding copyright licenses. Given the credibility of the Politecnico and in particular to the group that maintains the Creative Commons licenses I think they can do a good job spreading news in Italy. SeLiLi's mission includes giving advice on copyright for all kind of creative arts, from graphic arts to software, making its scope wider than that of FSFE's Freedom Task Force. This, BTW, proves that everybody, for-profits and non-profits, have to face competition. I wish the best to these friends in Torino.

Infatti, che senso avrebbe ora per Microsoft distribuire i voucher se non comprendono il supporto alla glibc?’ Anche su Groklaw se lo chiede Pamela, ricordando anche che i voucher distribuiti da Novell sono senza data di scadenza.’ Microsoft e Novell si sono messe in un ginepraio da cui usciranno solo rispettando veramente i loro clienti.

Free Software is first about ethics, not only licenses nor development models. Ethics in business has started to be considered as an important item and it's not unusual nowadays to see Corporate Social Responsibility mentioned in business reports. That's why I think that to qualify a Free Software Business we need to measure its orientation to doing good to freedom in the digital society. I've talked about this topic also in the past and I'm still convinced that consideration like the following from Roberto should come after looking at the companies missions and CSR reports.

sponsor, support, facilitate an open source project, that is a project that has a license compatible with the OSD definition, in a direct or indirect way.

the sponsoring/support must be continuous, that is it should not be a single, one time contribution.

I am aware that it's not easy to measure ethics or freedom in digital society. Neither is easy to measure sustainable development, but many have been suggesting ways for many years despite difficulties :) Probably this could be a role for FSFE's future activities?

Roberto si chiede: come faranno a guadagnare questi che producono film in modo collaborativo e li distribuiscono via Internet? Più ci penso e più ho l'impressione che la domanda sia sbagliata perché posta così non c'è risposta. Ho molti amici del giro di creativi, anche registi. Le loro esperienze con il mondo analogico non sono meno frustranti o più remunerative solo perché provano a distribuire le loro opere nei canali 'normali'. Anzi. Invece il caso di lonelygirl su youtube mi fa pensare che un'idea originale di business e un gruppo di creativi può avere successo anche nel mezzo digitale e senza sforzarsi di pensare a DRM o utopiche (orwelliane?) infrastrutture di micropagamenti. Certo, è stata solo una manovra pubblicitaria per passare a settori più classici come TV e cinema. Però ha ripagato l'investimento. La possibilità di produrre, distribuire e farsi pagare per i contenuti usando internet mi pare sia una chimera. Per ora questa mia è solo un'impressione, ma leggendo questo post trovo conferme alle mie impressioni: tutti i miei amici di cui sopra hanno lo stesso problema, senza considerare Internet. E volendo lo stesso discorso vale anche per i non creativi: quanti di noi hanno avuto i loro sogni frustrati dal mercato o altre restrizioni? Some Kindle users are angry because Amazon blocked them from their Kindle accounts, thereby blocking them from accessing their already-purchased media. Even if these stories are exaggerated, they once again highlight the caveats that come with DRMed media. You don't own your content—Amazon does.
